Dr. Suzanne Ildstad
Dr. Suzanne Ildstad is internationally recognized for her discovery of a “facilitating” cell that allows bone marrow stem cells to be transplanted from one person to another without life threatening rejection. That discovery has created a platform with the potential to permanently treat or cure more than 20 different diseases - many of which affect children or young adults. It also makes it possible to transplant organs and limbs without rejection or the need for anti-rejection medication.

Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg
Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg pioneered and continues to advance the use of banked umbilical cord blood as a source of stem cells for marrow transplantation in children. Under her leadership, Duke established the internationally known Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Program (PBMT) and currently treats children with cancer, blood disorders, immune deficiencies and metabolic disorders. It is the largest dedicated pediatric transplant program in the world.
Today, over half of all the children treated at Duke since the program was established in 1990 are surviving long-term and are considered cured of their underlying disease. With a current waiting list of 30-40 children and a referral base that is world-wide, the PBMT now transplants some 100 children annually. View MoreLinks to videos

Dr. Joeseph Leventhal
Dr. Joeseph Leventhal is an internationally recognized expert in antibody induction strategies for transplantation and the Director of the Living Donor Renal Transplant Program at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. It is the largest living donor program in the United States.
The Northwestern Transplant Program has worked continuously to expand the donor pool through innovative transplants, and was the first center in the Midwest to perform laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy. A less invasive and less painful method of kidney donation, they perform over 1,000 of these procedures annually.View More
